Exploring the Best Outdoor Activities in Tara River Canyon: Rafting, Zip Lining, and More

Montenegro is a hidden gem tucked away in the Balkans, with breathtaking natural beauty and a rich history. One of the most awe-inspiring destinations in the country is the Tara Canyon, a spectacular natural wonder that is a must-visit for any adventurous traveler.

Located in northern Montenegro, the Tara Canyon is the second-deepest canyon in the world, after the Grand Canyon in the United States. It is a part of Durmitor National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its striking beauty and diversity of flora and fauna.

Rafting on Tara River

One of the most popular activities in Tara Canyon is rafting on the Tara River, which winds its way through the canyon and is known for its clear blue waters and stunning scenery. The river is graded class II to class IV, offering a range of rapids for both beginners and experienced rafters. The most popular section for rafting is from Brstnovica to Scepan Polje, a 23-kilometer stretch that takes around three to four hours to complete.

Rafting day on Tara River

As you raft down the Tara River, you will be treated to breathtaking views of the canyon walls rising up around you, with cascading waterfalls and lush green forests adding to the natural beauty of the area. The rapids are exciting but not too challenging, making it a great activity for families, groups of friends, or solo travelers looking for an adventure.

Although I initially came to Montenegro for zip lining over Tara Canyon, I ended up enjoying rafting more. Rowing the boat across the rapids is a team effort, as everyone has to do their part, but it’s not very challenging and it’s easy to learn even if you’re a total beginner (like I was at the time). Our guide also offered us the possibility to jump out of the boat and take a swim where the water was calm, but be aware that the water can be very cold. I went rafting in May and the water was about 2 degrees Celsius, which caused a leg cramp the moment I touched the freezing water. Luckily I had my life jacket on to keep me afloat and the wetsuit helped my body warm up a bit pretty quickly. Another cool thing we did during our rafting session was stop a couple of times to enter the forest on the river banks and swim under waterfalls. The river is a never-ending source of fun if you just research your guide to make sure he will allow you to do all that.
