Accommodation review of The Houses of History – anno 1830 in Tihany, Hungary

If you’re looking for an honest review of The Houses of History – anno 1830 in Hungary, this article covers everything you need to know before booking. After spending one night at this historic property in Tihany, on the shores of Lake Balaton, I’ll share what made it one of the most memorable accommodations we ever booked, from the beautifully restored 19th-century buildings and peaceful gardens to the incredible breakfast that still stands out among the many hotels I’ve stayed at across Europe.

A Road Trip with an Unexpected Stop

As Hungary’s largest lake and the biggest freshwater lake in Central Europe, Balaton had fascinated me for a long time. Covering an impressive 596 square kilometers, stretching 78 kilometers from end to end and reaching up to 12 kilometers in width, it’s often called the “Hungarian Sea.” I had also heard countless stories from fishing enthusiasts who described it as a paradise for carp anglers, home to some truly impressive specimens.

Despite visiting Hungary several times over the years, I had somehow never ventured into this part of the country. Until the planets aligned and I convinced my friends to make a stop there on a road trip.

Together with a group of friends, I set off on a road trip from Bucharest to Prague to attend a concert. Since the journey is over 1,300 kilometers each way, we decided to split the drive into two stages.

On our way to Prague, we spent the night in Budapest—a city I never get tired of visiting. But when it came time to drive home, I suggested something different.

“Why don’t we stop at Lake Balaton instead?”

After years of wanting to see Hungary’s famous lake, this seemed like the perfect opportunity. Everyone agreed, and just like that, our return journey gained a brand-new destination.

It turned out to be one of the best decisions we made during the entire trip.

Discovering Tihany

Rather than staying somewhere along the southern shore, we chose Tihany, one of the most picturesque villages around Lake Balaton.

Located on a peninsula extending into the lake, Tihany is famous for its centuries-old Benedictine Abbey, lavender fields, vineyards, volcanic hills, and breathtaking viewpoints. The village itself feels almost like an open-air museum, where colorful houses, cobblestone streets, and beautifully maintained gardens create an atmosphere that’s difficult not to fall in love with.

For accommodation, we booked The Houses of History – anno 1830. Read further to see why we chose it and especially why we loved it.

Sleeping Inside History

When I did the research for accommodation, the Houses of History stood out because of a few things: a very good Booking.com review score (9.2 at the time of writing this review), the breakfast included in the price, the outdoor pool, its closeness to Balaton, and of course, the traditional character of the houses.

The name isn’t just clever marketing.

The Houses of History is built around beautifully restored buildings dating back nearly 200 years. The moment you enter the property, it feels as though you’ve stepped into another century, without sacrificing any of today’s comforts.

The traditional Hungarian architecture has been carefully preserved, while modern amenities have been subtly integrated throughout the property. Stone walls, wooden beams, antique furniture, flowering gardens, and peaceful courtyards create an atmosphere that’s both authentic and luxurious without feeling pretentious.

Instead of resembling a standard hotel, the entire property feels like a historic estate that has been lovingly restored over generations.

Our Room

We stayed in one of the spacious double rooms overlooking the gardens.

The room immediately impressed us with its tasteful design. Everything felt elegant yet cozy, combining historic charm with modern comfort. The furniture matched the building’s character perfectly, while practical touches like air conditioning, reliable Wi-Fi, a coffee machine, kettle, minibar, and a comfortable bed made it easy to relax after a long day on the road.

The bathroom was equally impressive—spotlessly clean, spacious, and stocked with quality toiletries.

One thing that deserves particular praise is the property’s maintenance. Although these buildings are roughly two centuries old, everything is impeccably cared for. It’s a wonderful example of how historic architecture can be preserved while still offering the comfort today’s travelers expect.

One of the Best Hotel Breakfasts I’ve Ever Had

Every traveler has a few hotel breakfasts they remember long after the trip ends.

This is one of mine.

Breakfast was included with our stay, and every morning we were greeted by an incredibly generous buffet featuring freshly baked bread and pastries, local cheeses, cold cuts, scrambled eggs, fresh vegetables, seasonal fruits, homemade cakes, cereals, yogurt, excellent coffee, juices, and plenty of Hungarian specialties.

Everything tasted fresh, everything was constantly replenished, and there was enough variety that you could easily enjoy something different each morning.

It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you slow down, pour yourself another coffee, and linger a little longer before heading out to explore.

The Perfect Place to Relax

After spending several days driving across Europe, sightseeing, and attending a concert, what we appreciated most was simply having a peaceful place to unwind.

The outdoor swimming pool quickly became our favorite spot.

Although it’s not particularly large, it’s surrounded by beautifully landscaped gardens and offers lovely views toward Tihany’s Inner Lake (Belső-tó). Spending an afternoon by the pool after hours on the road felt like the perfect reward.

The entire property has an incredibly peaceful atmosphere. Birds singing, centuries-old buildings, flowering gardens, and almost no traffic noise. It was exactly the kind of environment we needed before continuing our journey back to Romania.

Exploring Tihany

One of the hotel’s greatest advantages is its location.

Within just five minutes on foot, we reached the center of Tihany, where cafés, restaurants, souvenir shops, and the famous Benedictine Abbey (dating back to the 11th century) await visitors.

We spent hours wandering through the charming streets, enjoying spectacular viewpoints over Lake Balaton and admiring the peninsula’s unique landscape.

It’s worth noting that Hungary submitted Tihany as a possible candidate to be included on the UNESCO World Heritage list in the future.

Tihany is also known for its lavender fields, and although our visit came just before the main blooming season, it was easy to understand why this little village has become one of Hungary’s most beloved tourist destinations.

Whether you enjoy photography, nature, architecture, wine, or simply walking through beautiful places, Tihany has something to offer.

Why We Loved The Houses of History

Looking back, several things made this stay particularly memorable:

  • The beautifully restored historic buildings full of character.
  • Spacious, elegant, and extremely comfortable rooms.
  • Exceptionally maintained gardens.
  • A relaxing swimming pool perfect after a long drive.
  • One of the best breakfasts I’ve enjoyed in any hotel.
  • A peaceful atmosphere despite being only minutes from Tihany’s attractions.
  • Friendly staff who made us feel genuinely welcome.

It’s easy to understand why the property consistently receives outstanding reviews from guests.

Is The Houses of History Worth the Price?

Absolutely, but it also depends on what you’re looking for.

If your priority is simply finding the cheapest place to sleep near Lake Balaton, there are certainly more affordable guesthouses and apartments in the area. However, The Houses of History – anno 1830 offers something difficult to put a price on: atmosphere.

You’re not just booking a room; you’re staying in a beautifully restored historic estate that allows you to experience a small piece of Hungary’s architectural heritage while enjoying modern comforts. From the carefully preserved buildings and elegant rooms to the peaceful gardens and inviting swimming pool, every part of the property feels thoughtfully designed.

When you also factor in the exceptional breakfast, which could easily replace both breakfast and an early lunch, the value becomes even more apparent. Add the hotel’s prime location within walking distance of Tihany’s main attractions, and it’s easy to understand why so many guests return year after year.

Looking back at our stay, I never felt that we overpaid. Quite the opposite. Considering the overall experience, I believe the place offers excellent value for money, especially if you’re celebrating a special occasion, planning a romantic getaway, or simply want accommodation that’s memorable rather than ordinary.

Would I stay here again?

Without hesitation.

Practical Information (Parking, Best Time to Visit & Booking Tips)

If you’re planning your own trip to Tihany, here are a few things worth knowing before you book.

Parking

Since we were traveling by car from Prague back to Romania, on-site parking was an important factor for us. The hotel offers private parking for an additional daily fee, which we found convenient as it allowed us to leave the car safely and explore Tihany entirely on foot.

There are also some free parking options a short walk away, but if you’re traveling with luggage or simply prefer the convenience of having your vehicle nearby, paying at the property is a good option.

Best Time to Visit

We visited in May, and I honestly think it was an excellent time to experience Tihany.

The weather was pleasantly warm without being overly hot, the village wasn’t overcrowded, and everything felt calm and relaxing. Gardens were in full bloom, the surrounding hills were beautifully green, and it was easy to enjoy the viewpoints without competing with large tourist crowds.

The weather was good enough to take a swim in the property’s outdoor pool, but if your goal is swimming in Lake Balaton or experiencing the lively summer atmosphere, then June through August is the busiest season. This is also when the famous lavender fields reach their peak bloom, usually during June, attracting visitors from all over Hungary and beyond.

For travelers who prefer quieter destinations, lower accommodation prices, and pleasant temperatures for walking or cycling, May and September are probably the best months to visit.

Booking Tips

Because Tihany is one of the most popular destinations around Lake Balaton, accommodation fills up surprisingly quickly during weekends and throughout the summer season.

If you’re planning to visit between late spring and early autumn, I’d recommend booking several months in advance, especially if you want one of the larger rooms or suites.

Breakfast is included with most room rates, and I strongly suggest choosing a rate that includes it. It’s genuinely one of the hotel’s highlights and one of the best breakfasts I’ve enjoyed during my travels.

Finally, try to spend at least two nights here if your itinerary allows. We originally treated Tihany as a convenient stop on our drive home, but after arriving we quickly realized it deserved much more than just an overnight stay. The village, the surrounding peninsula, and the relaxed atmosphere invite you to slow down and enjoy the experience. Something that’s becoming increasingly rare in modern travel.

Check-in and Check-out

The property doesn’t feature a 24-hour front desk for check-in, so you need to make sure you are at the property between 15:00 and 20:00. If you require an early check-in (no earlier than 12:00), the property can’t guarantee it, but if you request it and they can make it happen, there’s an additional fee for this service.

What I found a bit odd is that you pay a different fee depending on the hour of your arrival; therefore, it’s more expensive to check in at 12:00 than to check in at 14:00. I mean, I get that they have to work faster to clean the room, but in most other places where I stayed, if they had the room available, they would give us the room for a flat fee or even free of charge.

They also charge a fee for late check-ins (you need to let them know your time of arrival at least one day in advance).

Late check-out is also possible, but you guessed it. For an additional fee.

All necessary information for check-in, check-out, and parking will be provided by the property after your booking is confirmed.

Final Thoughts

Sometimes a hotel is simply a place to sleep.

Other times, it becomes one of the highlights of the journey itself.

The Houses of History – anno 1830 definitely belongs to the second category.

Our stop at Lake Balaton was originally planned as nothing more than a convenient overnight break on the drive back from Prague. Instead, it became one of the most memorable parts of our entire road trip.

Not only did I finally tick Lake Balaton off my bucket list, but I also discovered Tihany, a village that completely exceeded my expectations, and stayed in one of the most charming historic properties I’ve visited in recent years.

If you’re planning a trip to Hungary’s Balaton region, I wholeheartedly recommend spending at least a couple of nights in Tihany. And if you’re looking for accommodation that combines history, comfort, exceptional breakfast, and genuine Hungarian hospitality, The Houses of History – anno 1830 is an easy recommendation.
